Each is a study of a significant automobile, using controlled light to reveal form, character and presence. Presented at 62 × 62 inches, each is conceived as a substantial visual object—created to hold space with the same authority as the car itself.

The number 21 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, driven by Hermann Lang and Fritz Riess, won the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans—the first overall victory there for Mercedes-Benz and for a German manufacturer.

Developed at Willow Springs in 1958, the Scarab broke the circuit lap record during an early test with Chuck Daigh at the wheel. It became one of the defining American sports racers of its era.
